47 THE GROWTH OF EDGE DEVICES AND CORE DATA The proliferation of connected edge devices coming online, creating and consuming data, is changing the way data needs to be managed. What are Edge Devices? Gartner and IDC estimate that between 25 Billion (Gartner) to 31 Billion(IDC) connected edge devices will exist by 2021, hence billions of connected edge devices and users will create and consume exabytes of data. Any hardware the controls data flow between networks is generally called an edge device. These devices provide a variety of functions including the transmission, routing, processing, monitoring, filtering and storage of date across networks. The application of Edge Devices are instrumental for modern enterprise and service providers. Cloud computing enables companies to store and process data outside of their own physical hardware and across a network of remote servers — popularly known as the “cloud.” Today, nearly everyone is using this technology. All smartphones send and receive data via their internet-enabled device while sharing this data across multiple devices through clouds. Your information is no longer confined to the memory capacity of your desktop or smartphone. In our data-heavy future, with billions of devices connected to the internet, faster and more reliable data processing will become crucial. The consolidation and centralized nature of cloud computing has proven cost-effective and flexible over recent years, but the rise of IoT and mobile computing has put a strain on networking bandwidth. Ultimately, not all smart devices need to utilize cloud computing to operate. In some cases, the back and forth can — and should — be avoided. What are Core Clouds? The cloud landscape is changing: data is spread across core clouds, within the Enterprise datacenter, and public clouds, managed by hyperscalers. IDC estimates up to 39,000 core cloud locations will exist by 2021. To the surprise of many data managers, the more data people can store, the more they will use. This in turn creates the needs for more and more clouds to storage the increasing demand in the market. The current explosion of video with YouTube, TikTok and Instagram means that new data is being produced at an astronomical rate. While in the corporate sector, medical imaging, cctv and service providers are struggling to integrate the surge in data. “IDC estimates up to 7 million of these “service edges” will be created in venues such as airports, ships, military bases, oil exploration platforms, stadiums, hospitals, public buildings and more.” IDC THE NEW ERA OF HYBRID CLOUD In July 2019, Scality introduced their solution to the future need to break silos and liberate data, with its RING8 upgrade to XDM or Extended Data Management designed to maintain 100% Availability across multiple Core Clouds. This is a game changer in Hybrid Cloud allowing the free flow of data across multiple clouds using one UI. RING8 brings its most sophisticated XDM Solution to Market to: Eliminate data silos: massively scalable & durable storage for core clouds that can span across petabytes as a single system Process Intelligent orchestration: data mobility policies across core, edge & public clouds, to move data for greater data protection. Create Global Visibility: data view & search across all clouds/sites for central point of governance for data Deliver Edge Data Services: storage, caching & mobility policies on object storage and NAS https://solvedscal.wpengine.com/products/ring8/
